The database finds that just 10 banks are responsible for almost 75% of the "direct financing" (both project- and corporate-level financing that can be directly traced to the Amazon) of Amazon oil and gas. This reveals the oversized role of a small number of banks, and therefore these institutions' greater responsibility to implement effective policies that identify, prevent and mitigate adverse impacts to the planet and people.

Methodology

The Amazon Banks Database is a repository of financial data documenting the flow of capital into the Amazon Biome (or Amazonia for the purpose of this scorecard) for oil and gas extraction. The database identifies global banks providing loans and bond underwriting to companies engaged as block operators, infrastructure owners, traders, and state-owned enterprises operating in the Amazon oil and gas sector. By systematically organizing information from multiple financial and public sources, the database quantifies financial institutions’ exposure to oil and gas extraction within Amazonia.
